Happy Quatro de Mayo everyone! We’re closing in on BKN Half race day, so we’re looking to treat our bodies kindly with a soft-surface workout and give our brains a change of scenery by finding a leafy spot. We’re leaving Central Park’s pavement this week and heading to the Great Hill track for some 1k repeats!
FOR THIS WEEK WE WILL MEET AT 7 P.M. AT THE GREAT HILL TRACK, not at our usual spot near light post E8301 and the Hamilton statue behind The Met. The Great Hill is above the highest point of the Harlem hill on West Drive, and also can be reached by climbing the stairs from the park entrance at W106.
Conveniently for this workout, each lap in what would be considered lane 1 if this were a demarcated track measures 334 meters, so we’ll be running almost three full laps (you better believe there will be a cone two meters short of the starting point). After a brief warmup the workout will be:
Version A: 5 x 1k at half-marathon pace with one-minute moving or one-minute standing recovery (participant’s choice).
Version B: 7 x 1k at half-marathon pace with one-minute moving recovery.
The forecast is cloudy, low 60s and barely a breeze—-ideal! And sunset is 758p, which should contribute to a splendid evening.
As always, please ask for suggestions on modifying the workout. The drinking fountain beside the track should be working, although I fancy a post-workout chocolate milk at the nearby deli at W108 and CPW. Bring fluids if you wish, plus I will happily safeguard bags, extra layers and Caramello bars. See you at the track!
